GoldenEye 007’s Remake Will Not Happen In Its Original Format

How many times have seen that a fan project is getting shot down due to the license holders complaining instead of supporting it…?

We previously wrote about the GoldenEye 25 project, which was meant to be the remake of GoldenEye 007 that launched in August ’97 on the Nintendo 64. The game quickly became one of the gems of the N64, which is why it got a reimagined version in 2010 called… GoldenEye 007 (which was available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS).

The developers said in a Twitter announcement (that we can’t link as it’s already gone…) that the team was „kindly asked” by MGM Studios and James Bond’s license holder Danjaq to shut down their project. They will comply, so GoldenEye 25 is now officially dead. In other words, they received a cease-and-desist letter, meaning if they’d have kept going, they’d have been sued…

GoldenEye 25 was meant to be a remake of GoldenEye 007’s single-player missions on PC, using Unreal Engine 4. The plan was to release it near the 25th anniversary of the original’s release, meaning it’d have been available for free in August 2022. Despite not being made for profit, MGM and Danjaq still decided to protect their rights, which is ridiculous, as it’d have been free advertising for them.

„This was always in the back of our heads as a possibility, but we’ve tried our best to keep going. We cannot do a Bond game but we can still do a great game with all the beloved aspects of our favourite ’90s action shooter,” the team wrote. So they are now redeveloping the game into Project Ianus, and its Twitter account will launch later this week, as it’s not opened yet.

Why is it a problem that there was an unofficial Bond game that would have been better than the last official one (007 Legends)?
