Is Obsidian Preparing For A The Outer Worlds Sequel?

Despite officially working on two other titles, it seems that there are plans to continue The Outer Worlds.

Microsoft acquired Obsidian in 2018, so they have been part of the Xbox Game Studios family for a while, but the Redmond-based company allowed them to keep The Outer Worlds (which has been under development for a while when the acquisition happened) as a multiplatform title – the game launched, and it was a success both critically and financially, giving some cash to Take-Two (whose Private Division label was the publisher for the game).

„Last I heard a new entry in the [The Outer Worlds] franchise is being explored; [it’s] currently in pre-production. [It] could change into something else ofc, but this is the current status,” Daniel Ahmad, Niko Partners’ senior analyst, wrote on Twitter. However, it doesn’t automatically mean it could become a game, as Obsidian is currently working on Grounded (available in early access) and Avowed, a new RPG that they announced this summer.

We also can’t say that the PlayStation will also receive it. From Mojang, Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons are both on PlayStation 4, but the game first showed up on the PlayStation console, and the Microsoft acquisition happened later. The sequel could be an exception, but the chance of it happening is low. This also applies to Bethesda, whose owners, Zenimax, have recently been also acquired by Microsoft, and now that Bethesda and Obsidian are under the same ownership, the latter could make a new Fallout game after Fallout: New Vegas (as The Outer Worlds was practically a Fallout game except in its name).

It’s not official yet, but Microsoft seems to follow the same trend: new IPs are exclusive to PC and Xbox, and the case-by-case decision hasn’t been used yet, which could be interesting with Bethesda titles.
