Is Sony Planning A Stronger PlayStation 5 Model?

Double the power – this is how the situation can be described in the least words possible.

Sony has filed a patent back in January 2019, and it might be a continuation of a possible tradition. In 2013, Sony launched the PlayStation 4, which was followed in 2016 by the PlayStation 4 Pro, which was pretty much a response to Microsoft, who was handily defeated with their Xbox One, which is why they launched the strongest-at-the-time console, the Xbox One X. (They also launched remodelled consoles for the base versions, the PlayStation 4 Slim and the Xbox One S.)

The patent was published in July 2020, and it could hint at a possible PlayStation 5 Pro model. In short, the patent describes a system that uses double GPUs. One of them would be responsible for the HDMI frame output, while the other one would help the main one. We have seen something on PC over ten years ago: in March 2008, NVidia launched the GeForce 9800 GX2. In response, in November 2008, AMD came out with the Radeon HD 4850 X2, and before that, in August 2008, the Radeon HD 4870 X2 was released.

The dual GPU solution would help because it would keep the high frame rate without sacrificing graphical fidelity. It would make sense on paper, and in practice, it would result in more electrical usage, and who knows if Sony will end up using this patent or not. However, IGN wrote in July 2017 that one of five PlayStation 4s sold was a PlayStation 4 Pro.

However, nothing is official at the moment. Microsoft did launch with two Xbox Series models, and even though the PlayStation 5 is available in two variants, the only difference between them is that the cheaper variant lacks an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive.
