There are a few rumours that Microsoft shot down – let’s recap the events of the weekend.
Previously, VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb hinted that FromSoftware‘s next title is going to be shown shortly. Now, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier joined by tweeting the following: „I know lots of people are desperate for Elden Ring news. I don’t know much about it (except that it’s been delayed a bunch). But there is strong evidence floating around that the game will be shown relatively soon. It’s not going to pull a Winds of Winter. Elden Ring has pages.” The second part of his words was a hint at George R.R. Martin‘s next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was used to create the Game of Thrones TV series, and he was responsible for writing the background lore of Elden Ring.
Schreier talking about many delays makes sense, as we have heard a few titles getting pushed to 2022: just think of Gran Turismo 7 and Hogwarts Legacy, but for different reasons, we can also add Dying Light 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 to this list. Then Paul Thurrott added, „Microsoft is holding a “what’s new for gaming” event on March 23. To be followed by a “what’s new for Windows” event! No date yet.” So something similar to the PlayStation 5: The Future of Gaming event from June.
However, Aaron Greenberg, the general manager of Xbox’ marketing, denied all of this: „Just to set expectations: this is not happening. There are always things we have in the works, but nothing coming soon that would feature game announcements or world premieres like this.” So he goes against what the three people previously said.
But it would be time to show the game, as it was last seen when it was announced in June 2019, during the Xbox E3 press conference. Elden Ring is supposedly heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but we wouldn’t rule out the cancellation of the PS4/X1 versions in favour of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series ports.
