Respawn Entertainment’s Documentary Won An Oscar! [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – This is a breakthrough moment for the gaming industry in the film industry!

Indeed: this is the first time we see anything from the gaming industry win an Oscar award. Respawn Entertainment released a VR game last year called Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. The game itself is somewhat forgettable (it wasn’t an outstanding title), but it came with a documentary tie-in, called Colette… which got the praise of the critics!

„We’re over the moon about Colette’s Best Documentary (Short Subject) Oscars win tonight! From Vince [Zampella], Peter [Hirschmann], and all of us at Respawn, we are humbled and honoured. Thank you. And if you haven’t seen the film, you can watch it for free here,” Respawn Entertainment wrote on Twitter. You can also check it out via the YouTube embed below. Colette, by Anthony Giacchino and Alice Doyard, beat these films to the punch (and the award): A Concerto Is a Conversation – Kris Bowers and Ben Proudfoot; Do Not Split – Charlotte Cook and Anders Hammer; Hunger Ward – Skye Fitzgerald and Michael Shueuerman; and A Love Song for Latasha – Sophia Nahali Allison and Janice Duncan.

Giacchino, born in 1969, said the following in his acceptance speech: „I want to thank our amazing E.P., Peter Hirschmann, at Electronic Arts, everyone at Electronic Arts and Respawn, and Oculus, especially Vince, Dusty and Mara.” While we don’t know who Mara is, Dusty should be Dusty Welch, a Respawn-founder, who has had a pivotal role in laying the foundations of Call of Duty.

Colette is about its titular character, 90-year-old Colette Marin-Catherine, who returns to a German concentration camp where her brother was killed after 74 years. Here’s The Guardian‘s synopsis: „As a young girl, she fought Hitler’s Nazis as a member of the French Resistance. For 74 years, she has refused to step foot in Germany, but that changes when a young history student named Lucie enters her life. Prepared to re-open old wounds and revisit the terrors of that time, Marin-Catherine offers important lessons for us all.”

Congratulations to Respawn for achieving this breakthrough!

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
