The first screening of the Ariana Grande Fortnite music tour aired today, and it’s packed with mini-games, music, and more.
The Ariana Grande Rift Tour musical journey began at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT/11 p.m. BST in Fortnite. It begins with players standing atop the giant mothership in the centre of the map for a few moments before a large rift opens up, sucking everyone in. Inside the rift, you float towards what appears to be the sleeping body of Fortnite-ified Ariana, who wakes up and reaches out to you.
From there, you’re immediately transported to a colourful, winding race track, similar to Super Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road, which you and other players speed through. You can slide into objects that cause small explosions of light before being transported to a strange planet/rock made of yarn that you can bounce up and down on, with non-Ariana music. An odd choice, but perhaps it’s meant to be more like opening acts?
Then you’re dropped into a plane with three other players, surrounding a giant monster covered in purple crystals. You shoot at the surrounding crystals and rocks and score points, with the final tally displayed after the brief gamified interlude ends. The screen goes black before dozens of Fortnite players appear in the void, standing or kneeling. You can help other players or be helped by them with a touching nod to togetherness before you’re launched into the first song: ‘raindrops (an angel wept)’. From that point on, it’s all pastel rainbows, clouds, flame unicorns and the giant Ariana Grande in a crystal dress lip-syncing to her hits.
Ariana Grande Fortnite setlist:
- Raindrops (an angel cried),
- 7 rings,
- Be Alright,
- The Way feat. Mac Miller,
- R.E.M.,
- Positions
About halfway through the event, the open notes of ‘The Way’ begin as the Fortnite version of Grande ascends a giant staircase in the sky. This could be a tribute to the late Mac Miller, who appears in the song and dated Grande for about two years.
Once the music ends, there’s a brief moment called “The Aftermath” where you can try to fly through the rainbow rings while riding a flame unicorn, the same mini-game that appears during the “R.E.M.” portion of Grande’s performance. If you missed the Ariana Grande Fortnite Rift Tour, don’t worry, as there are a few more chances to catch it this weekend.
