“It was Interesting to Shoot Matrix 4 at a Time When the World Was so Turned Upside Down”, Says Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

MOVIE NEWS – Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, which looks back at his impressive rise in Hollywood.

After a few supporting roles, he went on to shoot James Wan’s Aquaman (and will be back in his sequel), Jordan Peele’s Us, the Watchmen series, then Aaron Sorkin’s Chicago 7, the Nia DaCosta-directed remake of Candyman, and finally Matrix 4, Lana Wachowski’s eventful film, for which he recounts some memories of shooting, which took place during the Covid epidemic, between February and November 2020.

“I remember Keanu saying his first line,” says the 35-year-old actor. “I looked up, and he was there, and I was like, ‘Oh shit, I’m really in the Matrix!’ It was just Keanu and his voice. And all the technology Lana incorporated to make this movie, like these camera props that I’ve never seen before. It’s so ambitious.

And it was interesting to shoot Matrix 4 when the world was turned upside down and reality was distorted. It can even be quite creepy if you pay too much attention.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II isn’t saying anything about his role: will he play the new Morpheus or not? It has been rumoured for several months, with Laurence Fishburne having made it known that he would not be reprising the role in this sequel, which will be released on December 15.
