Halle Berry Doesn’t Regret Making Catwoman

MOVIE NEWS – “I got one of the biggest salaries of my life, and there’s nothing wrong with that!” – said Halle Berry.

Halle Berry is on the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly to talk about her directorial debut, Bruised, which will be released in the US in November. In it, the X-Men star looks back on her career, on its high points (her Oscar for In the Shadow of Hate, in 2001) as well as its flops: for example, she fully accepts that she was the heroine of Catwoman, by Pitof (Vidocq), in 2004. When the film received scathing reviews and she won a Razzie Award for Worst Actress for the role, she came to collect her prize, not at all offended by this “honour”. I got one of the biggest paychecks of my life, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” she says of the experience. I don’t want to think, ‘I can only do prize films. What does an Oscar role mean?

Last year, Halle Berry detailed to Digital Spy the reasons – other than her salary – why she agreed to play Catwoman. “It was very disappointing not to be able to do a solo film about Jinx, Halle Berry’s character in the 2002 James Bond episode Die Another Day. It was an idea that was too far ahead of its time, nobody wanted to put money on a black action heroine. They wanted to be sure of making a profit. Yet we were there to do it. (When I signed on for Catwoman), people were saying, ‘You can’t do that, come on, you just won an Oscar!’ I couldn’t shoot Jinx, so I thought, ‘Here’s a great chance for a woman of colour to be a superhero. Why not give it a try?’ Well, the story wasn’t great… (Sharon Stone played the big bad and the plot revolved around a cosmetics company, ed. note) I remember we had an argument about it: ‘Why can’t Catwoman save the world? Why is she only there to save women from a harmful face cream that damages their skin?’ Anyway, I was only the actress in the film, not the director. I didn’t have any say in it.”
