A promise is a promise. The first trailer of Matrix 4 was unveiled on Youtube on Thursday 9 September, two days after two short video teasers. The opportunity for Warner Bros. to confirm once again the release date of this fourth episode of the saga directed this time by Lana Wachowski in solo. This trailer allows us to learn more about the journey of Neo and Trinity, played by Keanu Reeves and Carry Anne Moss who both return in Matrix: Resurrections. Almost twenty years after the release of Matrix Revolutions, the licence is getting a fourth film entitled Matrix Resurrections. Written and directed by Lana Wachowski, the feature film will see the return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss to the cast. They will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity in this fourth installment scheduled for a release date of December 22, 2021 in the United States. So the wait is almost over!

 

What is the release date of Matrix 4?

 

At the moment, Matrix 4 is announced to be released on 22 December 2021 in the US. The film is due to be released in France on 15 December 2021. The coronavirus crisis has shuffled the cards in Hollywood many times, so it is not impossible that the film will be postponed without warning.

 

What is the script of Matrix 4?

 

No information has been released about the script of Matrix 4. The return of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity may suggest that it will be a sequel to Matrix Revolutions, rather than a prequel or spin-off. As a reminder, the first Matrix film follows the story of Thomas Anderson, aka Neo. After discovering that the dystopian future he lives in is actually a computer simulation created by machines, he joins a group of humans freed from the virtual world to fight against the machines and the programs of the “Matrix”. The success of the first film led to a whole multimedia universe around Matrix: two cinema sequels (Matrix Reloaded, 2003; Matrix Revolutions, 2003), a series of animated shorts (The Animatrix, 2003), two video games (Enter the Matrix, 2003; The Matrix: Path of Neo, 2005) and an MMORPG (The Matrix Online, 2005-2009).

 

What is the cast of Matrix 4?

 

We know a little more about the people working on Matrix 4. Lana Wachowski, after co-creating and directing the first trilogy, is expected to participate in the production, direction and writing of this new film. On the casting side, we already know that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity. However, there is no information on the participation of Laurence Fishburne and his character Morpheus, who completed the trio of protagonists of the first film. It has also been announced that actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Us) has joined the cast in one of the main roles as have Jada Pinkett Smith and Jonathan Groff.

 

Is a Matrix 5 movie in the works?

 

While a fourth film in the sci-fi franchise is approaching cinemas, helmed by Lana Wachowski, a fifth Matrix-related project is reportedly in development. On his Twitter account, screenwriter Zak Penn confirmed in early October 2019 that two separate projects around the Matrix universe are in the works at Warner Bros: Matrix Resurrections, and another feature film set “earlier in the Matrix timeline”. It would “not be a reboot” according to the writer. If this feature film is indeed produced, it would be the fifth film in the licence but it would not be Matrix 5, which has not yet been announced.
