Can Ubisoft Close Your Account & Delete Your Games After 6 Months Of Inactivity – A Gamer’s Horror Story

One Ubisoft user got this unpleasant surprise after taking an extended break.

Another horror story from the world of video games: a Ubisoft Connect user lost his account after six months of inactivity, resulting in all his games on the platform being deleted.

Tor, a Norwegian gamer, shared his story on PCWorld to both complain about Ubisoft‘s policy and warn other users. Tor regularly played titles such as Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin’s Creed but decided to take a break from gaming and sell his PC. He wanted to return to gaming in the summer of 2021, only to have his account suspended by the company for being inactive for an extended period of time.

After being informed of this, Tor found an email sent by the company (which ended up in his spam folder) warning him that his account would be closed if he didn’t log in within the next 30 days. Now that the deactivation has taken place, Ubisoft has told the player that there is no way to get it back. Needless to say, the other platforms Tor was registered on did nothing of the sort.

Ubisoft imposes this policy in order to comply with privacy regulations

Unfortunately, the situation is also covered by the company’s terms of use, which state that your account can be “terminated upon notification if your account has been active for more than six months”. Following the Tor case, the company defended itself by citing the requirements of the GDPR: “We have implemented the account deletion process in accordance with the requirements of the GDPR (Article 5(1)(e) on data retention period limits). Our policies are in line with legal requirements and industry standards. This measure also serves to protect our players against fraud.”

Nevertheless, the company has reviewed its decision with Tor for breach of the account closure requirements. The affected player has finally been reinstated, although this situation also reminds us that we need to log in to Ubisoft Connect regularly to avoid having our games deleted by the company…
