The founder of Tango Gameworks and the Resident Evil’s creator, now part of Microsoft (which Redmond acquired through ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda), wants to direct at least one more game…
Shinji Mikami was interviewed by VG247. He’s known for several games: apart from being the creator of Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, God Hand and Vanquish are some of the games he’s been “in”, and although he hasn’t been in the director’s chair at Tango Gameworks for a long time (he’s not the director of Ghostwire: Tokyo, which was in the news in great detail today), he’d like another chance despite his age (56).
He intentionally started the studio to give young and talented creators a chance, but he would like to direct one more time before he retires. Zenimax producer Masato Kimura stressed that they don’t want him to say that this is his last game, and it’s a given that Mikami will NOT direct Tango’s next project. Until then, who knows how many years will pass: by then, the developer who laid the foundation for Resident Evil will be in his sixties.
If Capcom does go ahead with a Resident Evil 4 remake (rumours suggest that they will), Mikami (who directed RE4 in 2005 after several reboots…) said that fans are likely to want to see it, which is good, and then added self-critically that it would be great if Capcom could improve the story a little and offer a better product. By the way, he wrote the story three weeks under, because… that’s exactly how much time he had. Someone in the Japanese publishing house lost their marbles…?
By the way, Capcom tends to change the stories in remakes somewhat. For example, in the 2020 Resident Evil 3 remake, Brad, the weakest member of the S.T.A.R.S., had a more significant role, but he died just as badly (but at least we get to see who got infected with the T-Virus…).
