Microsoft CEO On Activision Blizzard’s Acquisition: “We Are Still Only 3rd In The Industry”

Satya Nadella says the industry is fragmented, so Xbox will not have a monopoly.

The titanic acquisition that Xbox surprised the industry with a few weeks ago is already well known; Phil Spencer himself shared some comments later, but what about Microsoft’s CEO? Satya Nadella has finally spoken out on the matter, mentioning that Xbox will remain “number 3” in the industry after the acquisition and will not be held back by the threat of a monopoly.

“The place where the limitations really lie is in distribution” – Satya Nadella

Nadella shared his views on the Activision Blizzard acquisition with the Financial Times. The CEO believes the games industry is too fragmented, and Microsoft is still lagging behind the likes of Tencent and Sony. “This is the fundamental category,” the CEO said. “Yes, we will be big players, but only within a fragmented field.”

“Why are these content companies trying to grow?” continued Nadella. “It’s because the place where the limitations really lie is in distribution.” The CEO explained that this is why Microsoft hopes to successfully distribute its products to gamers through purchases like Activision Blizzard’s, using tools like xCloud.

Nadella added that Windows is the only open distribution platform for video game content. “Windows’ biggest store is Steam, and we don’t own it,” the CEO explained. “People can use any payment method they want, while the other game platforms are closed.”

Xbox Game Pass is currently one of the most substantial aspects of Microsoft’s games division, with record revenues from subscriptions and launches. Now that Activision Blizzard has become part of Xbox, the community is looking forward to seeing iconic titles like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and many more arrive on the subscription service.
