A Dangerous Vulnerability has been Discovered in the Dark Souls III Video Game, Taking Control of Players’ Computers

We’ve previously reported that a serious vulnerability has been discovered in Dark Souls III, and now Kaspersky antivirus software has confirmed and clarified this in a recent announcement, which we’re quoting here one-by-one.

“A new RCE vulnerability has recently been discovered in the Dark Souls III video game, which allows attackers to remotely execute instructions on victims’ computers. The vulnerability has affected previous games in the Dark Souls series and users fear that the same could be true for the upcoming Elden Ring game, which is believed to use the same infrastructure. In response to the threat, the developers have temporarily disabled PvP servers in Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III, and plan to do the same for Dark Souls: Prepare To Die. The bug only affects PC users, so Xbox and PlayStation are not affected.

The RCE vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it allows attackers to run almost any program on a victim’s computer. This allows them to steal users’ personal data and install malware that can cause long-term damage.

There is not much information available on the exact details of the vulnerability at this time, but FromSoftware is currently working on a fix. In the meantime, the Kaspersky team recommends that players choose high-quality security solutions for all their devices.”
