Ubisoft Defended The NFTs Internally, Amid Fierce Disapproval From Employees

Despite employee scepticism, Ubisoft is reportedly giving away Ghost Recon NFTs to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

In recent weeks, Ubisoft has positioned itself as the biggest supporter of NFTs. It started with the controversial Ubisoft Quartz, which soon received strong criticism from the public. The company says the public “doesn’t understand” the potential of digital tools, but now it seems to be facing scepticism from its own employees.

“Trust in management has already been shaken by the handling of harassment cases, and now this?” – An anonymous employee

As reported by Jason Schreier in Bloomberg, many employees spoke out after receiving a memo from their supervisors that “sought to answer key questions about the blockchain and communicate as clearly as possible.” This not only sparked widespread opposition but also statements strongly opposing any suggestion by NFTs and Ubisoft to move towards the universe: “Are we competing with EA for the title of ‘the most hated studio by the public’? Because that’s what you’re doing,” comments one employee.

Some employees don’t understand this change of direction and prefer to focus on making quality video games: “You know what else makes a lot of money? Making fun, spectacular and innovative hit games! Why not focus on that?” In addition to these opinions, there are those who recall another, more controversial episode at Ubisoft: “Seriously, confidence in the management has already been shaken by the handling of harassment cases, and now this?”

Ubisoft has not released a statement reflecting on the outcry from employees or a possible resolution to the situation, although one report suggests that the company will be giving out NFTs to subordinates to celebrate Ghost Recon’s 20th anniversary. After all, it all started with the Ubisoft Quartz mentioned above, but the company has made other moves in this area with a partnership with a platform using blockchain technology and NFTs.
