The Housemarque Team Behind Returnal Is Already Working On A New IP

The studio’s CEO, Ilari Kuittinen, shared his plans at the DICE Awards, where Returnal won several awards.

Returnal managed to be an atypical shooter with an unusual approach these days, delivering triple-A production values. It’s a rogue-lite like the ones we fell in love with in the past, with an arcade-based and challenging but next-generation narrative and graphics. The talent of studio Housemarque hasn’t gone unnoticed by PlayStation, who agreed to acquire it last year.

“We’re one of the very last dinosaurs making arcade games” – Ilari Kuittinen, CEO of Housemarque

The title also made a big splash at the recent DICE Awards, where It Takes Two once again swept the judges’ awards, winning Game of the Year and Best Design, while Returnal won Best Original Music and Best Sound Design. In an interview after the awards ceremony, Returnal’s narrative director Gregory Louden, Housemarque CEO Ilari Kuittinen and game director Harry Krueger answered some questions from Venture Beat about the studio’s future.

In one answer, Kuittinen talked about the identity of Housemarque’s games and how they fit into today’s industry and multiplayer games-as-a-service. Kuittinen described the studio as “one of the very last dinosaurs making arcade games”, recalling Nex Machina, the arcade-style shoot ’em up from the 1980s.

“We create a concept. We’ll see what comes with that” – Ilari Kuittinen, CEO of Housemarque

On multiplayer games, Kuittinen admitted that they have been working on multiplayer games because they felt it was an obligation years ago. “We tried that, and we really didn’t do it as well. But it’s early days with us starting a new game, a new IP, concepting it out. We’ll see what comes with that,” Kuittinen revealed. It looks like we’ll need some time to find out more details about the studio’s new title, but we’re looking forward to seeing what Housemarque’s witch’s kitchen has in store for us.
