Agony Unrated: The Solution For The Missing Copies Launch In A Few Days

Anyone who bought Agony Unrated separately is not affected, but everyone else is; the Polish studio behind the game has already figured out how to return the adult edition of their game to players.

Let’s quickly recap what the situation is. We wrote about this topic in February: “Agony is a survival horror where you must escape from hell by finding the Red Goddess. Madmind Studio had planned an 18+ version of this game called Agony Unrated, which was initially cancelled for technical and legal reasons, but eventually showed up on Valve’s digital game store. And now, it’s partially gone. Everyone who bought Agony got the Unrated version for free, so there was no shortage of availability.

The Polish developers explained in an announcement on Steam that Agony and Agony Unrated have been unlinked from each other. “As most of you know, until now, if you bought Agony, you also received a copy of Agony UNRATED in your library. This was always our intended way to do this, and that didn’t change. As some of you are also aware, games with themes similar to ours can often face some difficulties on this platform. Unfortunately, we still don’t have full knowledge on why they were delinked, and we’re unable to link the games again using our tools, so we’re now in contact with Steam support to work out the solution that’ll satisfy everyone,” the studio wrote.” Since then, two weeks have passed.

We have since found out what happened. Valve has decided to separate Agony and Agony Unrated because some players directly bought the censored edition and got access to the uncensored version, which they did not want. That’s why the Unrated version was available at a 65-95% discount: this was the Madmind’s apology, but now, we are again informed on the game’s Steam forum about the solution the team has chosen.

Agony Unrated will be released as DLC in a few days, which owners of the original edition can download without paying. And in the comments, it’s described that saves and achievements from the standalone version will be fully supported in the DLC version, as it will carry them over. Madmind had taken this step before (adding an adult version DLC for Succubus). They are now awaiting confirmation from Valve and cannot give any details. When they have everything, a proper announcement will come.

That is a decent approach. We’ll get to the bottom of this soon…
