Samuel L. Jackson Gives A Pithy Response To Filmmakers Criticising Marvel Movies [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – Marvel movie star Samuel L. Jackson has given a fiery response to critics of superhero movies.

Don’t tell Samuel L. Jackson that a Marvel movie is not a movie! In recent years, superhero movies have come under fire from filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott and Roland Emmerich, who have all had negative things to say about the genre and its impact on Hollywood. The situation came to light when Jackson was a guest on The View, and the actor deflected criticism by saying that directors who criticised superhero films were really just upset that their own films were not doing so well.

“Movies are movies. Those are the movies that I went to see when I was a kid. And the artistry of making a movie is something that was a mystery for so long. Making movies is no longer a mystery. Kids know how to do it on their phones. So it’s easy for [filmmakers] to dismiss it, only because people aren’t going to see their movie.”

Jackson went on to explain that modern society’s fascination with superhero movies is nothing new, it’s just that the genre that is currently the most popular has changed over the years.

The actor recalls that when he was a kid, it was Westerns that held that spot, and although comic book adaptations have since become Hollywood’s latest craze, moviegoers go to see those films for precisely the same reasons.

“It’s like we’ve been dumbed down, but that’s always been the case. When we were younger, people went to see cowboy movies, and they went to see superhero movies of another ilk, they had superheroes on television. When you told a serious story, yeah, you find a niche audience – same thing still happens. People go to the movies to make themselves feel better and to get out of their daily existence… People go into the big, darkroom to have a good time. It’s a shared good time. You laugh together and scream together. I still do movies that I would have gone to see when I was a kid.”

Secret Invasion is produced for Disney+ by Kyle Bradsheet. The series is set in the MCU, and Samuel L. Jackson returns as Nick Fury alongside Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. Kingsley Ben-Adir will appear as the main villain, and Emilia Clarke will be seen in a mysterious role. Olivia Colman, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald and Carmen Ejogo also star in the series. Inspired by comic books, the series is about shapeshifting aliens called Skrulls who have infiltrated the planet.

On The View, Jackson was also asked about the Secret Invasion. Knowing how secretive he must be about Marvel projects, the actor didn’t say much about the series. He can only reveal one specific piece of information, refusing to say anything else about how.

“Nick Fury’s in it.”

That’s good to know, even if it’s not exactly a surprise. Secret Invasion has no official release date on Disney+ yet, but it’s expected to arrive in late 2022.
