Stranger Things Prosthetic Designer Reveals How The Character Of Vecna Was Born

MOVIE NEWS – Stranger Things has brought a new villain to life in season four, and now we’ve got a glimpse into the hands-on make-up and prosthetics artists behind him.

The first half of Stranger Things season 4 was a big success – we reviewed it. The series is at the forefront of the ‘less CGI, more practical effects’ trend that’s becoming increasingly popular these days, so they set out to make the new villain Vecna as realistic as possible, and that meant a hefty makeover was needed.

Now, Barrie Gower, prosthetic make-up designer at BGFX Ltd, has shared some behind-the-scenes footage of Vecna’s make-up rehearsals and original sculpt.

Having previously worked on effects such as Game of Thrones and The Witcher, these shots are exactly as unique as you’d expect. In one post, Gower said:

“Here’s a shot of the test make-up we did of ‘Vecna’ for Stranger Things 4. We were super lucky to work with @bowerjamie , an incredible actor who’s great humour and stamina made this make-up possible. We had an amazing team working on this.”

Of course, additional effects were added to Vecna’s character during post-production. Still, it’s the actor in the costume that brings the performance to life, both the character herself and the people playing alongside her. Undoubtedly, the work invested in Vecna’s development has paid massive dividends in the series, and with two episodes to go, there is still much more to come from this collection of nightmares.

Part I of Stranger Things season 4 is now available on Netflix, with Part II arriving on 1 July.
