PlatinumGames: They Want Stronger Nintendo Ties; Scalebound Is Out Of The Question

Atsushi Inaba, PlatinumGames’ CEO, said Babylon’s Fall was a failure.

The Japanese studio is going through a transition period with the release of the long-awaited Bayonetta 3, which will hopefully be a success worthy of the franchise. At the same time, it has been announced that the PlatinumGames-developed Babylon’s Fall, another significant live service failure for Square Enix after Marvel’s Avengers, will be discontinued. Meanwhile, they are also looking at self-publishing, so they hired Takao Yamane, Nintendo’s former head of licensing, sales and planning, who is now the new VP and business head of PlatinumGames.

In a new interview with VGC, Inaba stressed that they plan to strengthen their ties with Nintendo: “Yamane didn’t leave Nintendo on bad terms at all, and this partnership that we have with Nintendo is essential to us right now and will be moving forward. With Yamane-san joining us here, PlatinumGames can build an even stronger relationship with Nintendo moving forward. That can only be a positive thing for PlatinumGames. So yeah, we’re happy to have him on board.” It doesn’t mean that the big N will publish their games: Inaba was trying to emphasise that their games can be released on Nintendo platforms. After all, Astral Chain and Bayonetta are two IPs that are available on their platforms…

But what about Xbox? Scalebound is, after all, a black spot in the events between the two companies. Hideki Kamiya, one of PlatinumGames’ renowned developers (who was Scalebound’s director), would take on the job of making the game, which was cancelled almost six years ago but hasn’t heard from Xbox boss Phil Spencer (who has only said that there are no plans to make it). Inaba touched on the subject, “In terms of what Phil Spencer was saying, I’m not sure where that reaction came from and what he was thinking… we’re not sure, to be honest with you. But if in any way he has changed his mind in a positive way for us, then that’s something that we’re pleased about. ‘Personally,’ it’s very positive from my viewpoint. Phil! Let’s do it together again!” That seems to be Kamiya’s reaction as well.

So PlatinumGames’ titles will likely come to Xbox, too.
