Persona 3 & 4: Bad News For Fans Of One Of The Next-Gen Consoles…

Atlus has confirmed that the next-gen versions of Persona 3 and 4 will be made natively for Xbox and will therefore be platform exclusive.

Xbox Series X/S will receive next-gen versions of Persona 3 and its two sequels shortly. The developers have now confirmed that the fresh release will be platform-exclusive. Atlus and Xbox announced earlier this year that the Persona franchise would be coming to Xbox Series X/S and Game Pass, with the first edition set for a recent release in October.

While previous Persona games have been primarily PlayStation-exclusive, Persona 4 and its prequels are now coming natively to Xbox Series X/S.

Persona titles from Persona 3 to 5 were announced for Xbox Series X/S during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase in June, but since the games are being made natively for the latest Xbox hardware, their release will be timed. Persona 5 has an Xbox Series X/S release date of 21 October, while Persona 3 and 4 will arrive on Microsoft’s platform on 19 January, but PlayStation fans will have to wait for a next-gen update for these titles.

According to Gematsu’s Twitter account, Atlus was asked back in June if Persona 3 and 4 would be native to Xbox Series X/S or would run with backwards compatibility but only received a response yesterday. According to Gematsu, Atlus has confirmed that these games will be coming natively to Xbox Series X/S as new releases rather than porting existing versions of the titles to the console.

Since Persona 3 was first released in 2006 and later updated for PSP, and Persona 4 was released in 2008 and then again as Persona 4 Golden, the native Xbox Series X/S release will allow Xbox fans to get the optimal versions of the games when they debut.

Persona 4 Arena has been pushing the series forward on Xbox hardware since 360 and remains playable on Xbox Series X/S through backwards compatibility.

However, the mainline Persona games have never been released on Xbox. Atlus has not yet confirmed whether the PS5 will get a next-gen version of 3 or 4 or whether both will remain the same, but the updates could at least mean timed exclusivity for Xbox. Persona 5 is expected to be released for Xbox soon, but it’s unlikely that a simple port would have seen too many changes given that Persona 5 Royal only came out in 2019.

While some Persona fans have lamented that Persona 3 and 4 may not get a next-gen update compared to the PlayStation versions, others have predicted that the franchise won’t be as successful on Microsoft’s platform.
