NPD Group: The PlayStation 5 Won In October

According to a report by the US-based NPD Group, Sony’s console was the best-selling console on the market last month.

According to NPD’s Mat Piscatella, hardware sales in October were down 10% year-on-year to $424 million, but double-digit growth was recorded by both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series. PlayStation 5 won in terms of both the number of units sold and the amount of money generated, with the Xbox Series coming second in both aspects, making Nintendo Switch (despite the release of Bayonetta 3) the backmarker. Accessories (e.g., controllers) sales were down 8% to $148 million. The PlayStation 5’s Midnight Black DualSense controller sold the most.

The market was flat when software sales were considered, achieving the same $4.271 billion as a year earlier. Digital sales and subscriptions increased, mainly due to the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. The game continued the franchise’s tradition that started 15 years ago (it became the best-selling game in its release month). There were eight new releases in the top 20, with Gotham Knights starting at #2 and taking 14th in the yearly overall rankings. The growth was held back by 7% mobile content and hardware sales. Let’s see the top rankings:
