MOVIE NEWS – Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are teaming up with Prime Video to create a live-action God of War series.

 

 

The famous ancient mythology-themed video game God of War will be added to Prime Video’s catalogue. A recent report from Deadline confirmed the news, with the streaming service placing a series order for the project. The PlayStation franchise has seven titles in total, which have become extremely popular with gamers. The action game series debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2005. Kratos, a former Spartan warrior, fights the Greek god of war, Ares, and seeks revenge. When Kratos himself becomes a ruthless god of war, he seeks a chance to change his own destiny.

In 2018, Santa Monica Studio relaunched the franchise for PlayStation 4, taking Kratos to the northern wilderness. There he gets a second chance at fatherhood with his son Atreus. The title won several awards at the 2018 Game Awards, including Game of the Year.

The Prime series continues the story of Kratos. Free of his murderous past, the hero puts down his weapon for good in the northern realm of Midgard. After the death of his beloved wife, Kratos sets out on a perilous journey with his son to fulfil his last wish and scatter his ashes on the highest peak. As the series progresses, Kratos realizes that this journey will become an epic adventure. Kratos faces new obstacles with his son on this quest as he battles new gods and monsters to save the world.

 

Prime Video is “honored” to share Kratos’ story

 

The God of War script was written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men). Production is overseen by Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time). The series is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions. It is expected to be released worldwide on Prime Video.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television at Amazon Studios, describes God of War as “an exciting, character-driven franchise with immersive worlds and rich storytelling for audiences worldwide.

“We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”

As Sony Pictures Television Studios President Katherine Pope said, the team is creating an immersive series. It will take viewers on an epic mythological journey of Kratos:

“We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series.”

Other executive producers include Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Yumi Yang and Roy Lee of PlayStation Productions. Also Roy Lee of Vertigo. Jeff Ketcham will also serve as co-executive producer.

While the series is likely still some way off, fans can’t wait to see what the live-action interpretation of God of War looks like when it hits Prime Video in the next few years.
