Even though Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot is cutting his salary, we still have one question: dear Yves, shouldn’t the management team have to bear the burden, too?
Ubisoft is not in a good position at the moment. They have canceled three games that have not yet been announced, Skull & Bones has been delayed again (it’s still a question of how they can lure the community away from Rare and Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves!), and we don’t see much chance of Beyond Good & Evil 2 released ever. We don’t have much confidence in the release of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. No wonder the French company’s shares are nosedived with a 19% drop on Thursday. (Is it any wonder, then, that according to insider Jeff Grubb, Ubisoft was laughed at when it offered itself to several companies…?!)
Kotaku has obtained a letter written by Guillemot, and it’s so out of touch with reality that we have to quote a sentence from it: “The ball is in your court to deliver this [game] line-up on time and at the expected level of quality.” Afterward, he complained that the plethora of delays had increased their costs and reduced their revenues, then expected the staff to show full energy and commitment to get Ubisoft back on the road to success. In other words: the boss is simply passing responsibility on to the staff while he just sits there, doing nothing of importance!
Guillemot earned more than €1 million in 2021 (it doesn’t include bonuses, which amounted to $200 million in 2021 for Activision Blizzard King CEO Bobby Kotick; this company is also notorious for sexual harassment), and last year, it was €624,824, and that’s down by another 30% this year. He urges the company’s members to be careful and strategic with spending and initiatives to ensure the company is as efficient and lean as possible.
It is easy for him to say that from the CEO’s seat.
