In the first quarter of 2023, Sony didn’t achieve just a double-digit growth…
When comparing the first three months of 2023 to January-March 2022, Sony’s console has had its best-ever performance. Gamesindustry has reported on the situation in the UK, one of the most critical areas of the games industry (not only from a consumer point of view but also from a development point of view!). The PlayStation 5 is taking the results about on its back, with 180% more of Sony’s consoles sold in a year (there was an indication of this in January, when the growth rate was 202% compared to January 2022)! It also has a statistically discernible side effect: the performance of the two rivals has fallen.
In the case of the Nintendo Switch, we can accept it, as the platform is six years old. Its next big exclusive, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is coming soon (the big N even contacted Discord about a leak, a scary topic we discussed yesterday), so it could push the sales significantly shortly. Still, Switch sales are down 25%. The Xbox Series has been relegated to third place, with sales down 18%. So Sony’s got the market there by the throat…
Game sales were up by just 1% in the first quarter of the year (and it was primarily driven by Hogwarts Legacy, the first game since Red Dead Redemption 2 to sell so well that it wasn’t part of FIFA or Call of Duty). Resident Evil 4 Remake didn’t match the performance of the second and third part remakes, but it still took March. Here are last month’s top 10, with the publisher in brackets:
- Resident Evil 4 (Capcom)
- Hogwarts Legacy (Warner)
- FIFA 23 (Electronic Arts)
- WWE 2K23 (Take-Two)
- Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two)
- Tchia (Kepler)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 (Take-Two)
- Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo)
- NBA 2K23 (Take-Two)
