Electronic Arts Opens New Studio; Working On The Black Panther Game

Cliffhanger Games’ first project is still in early development, but everyone has to start somewhere.

According to an announcement from Electronic Arts, Cliffhanger Games is based in Seattle, the capital of the US state of Seattle, and their first project is based on Black Panther, an IP from the Mouse Empire, a Disney-owned Marvel property. It will be a third-person, single-player game. According to studio head Kevin Stephens (formerly VP and studio head of Monolith Productions), Cliffhanger Games is built on the values of diversity, collaboration, and empowerment.

“We want our game to enable players to feel what it’s like to be worthy of the Black Panther mantle in unique, story-driven ways. We also want Cliffhanger Games to empower everyone on our team as we collaborate to bring this amazing world to life. We’re still early in development with a long road ahead. Still, we know the foundation of any great story is to build an experienced team with diverse voices and perspectives, and that’s what we want to build, especially with a superhero as important as Black Panther. As we begin this remarkable journey, we are excited to be working with Marvel Games to ensure that we craft every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves,” says Stephens.

The Cliffhanger Games team includes veterans who have worked on projects such as God of War (Sony Santa Monica), Halo Infinite (343 Industries), and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (Monolith Productions; it’s as if Cliffhanger is their spiritual successor…). Being a new studio, it’s no surprise that they have a lot of job offers on their website.

As the game has only recently started development, it will undoubtedly be 2-3 years before it is released. Among the target platforms, we can undoubtedly predict PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, as Disney is not keen on developing exclusives.
