Forza Motorsport: The AI Can Keep Up With The Pros [VIDEO]

Forza Motorsport 8 has gotten rid of its numbering following silly trends and will feature excellent machine learning artificial intelligence.

Chris Esaki, creative director of Forza Motorsport, looked deeper at the racing game’s reworked artificial intelligence during the latest monthly broadcast. There are two sides to the system. One handles how the AI’s cars brake, accelerate, and corner, while the other handles the appropriate racing line on the track. Turn 10 has reworked both systems to reflect the principles of clean, competitive racing. For this reason, the studio has rethought the concept of the Drivatar. It used to mimic how the riders on our friend’s list raced in their previous races, but it also allowed unsafe riders to “infiltrate,” so instead of a race, we got a destruction derby.

Forza Motorsport has no user behavior, only paint jobs, car customization, and clothing, courtesy of Drivatar. And for artificial intelligence, Turn 10 has used machine learning to teach the technology without cheating (if you get too far away from them, they suddenly catch you driving much faster, and vice versa – that’s rubber banding), using all combinations (car, its upgrades, track, weather conditions). In Forza Motorsport 7, the developers added three racing lines to the game, but there are nineteen for each combination.

For comparison, in the video, artificial intelligence was put to work on the Maple Valley track in the two Forzas. In the new game, the AI was thirteen seconds faster, and there were no scripted mistakes but honest errors here and there. Esaki even showed off the tire collision model, which we’ve heard is forty-eight times more accurate, but what’s new is that the old physics could cause some precipitous behavior (‘spikes’) in the suspension. The new system will result in better, more refined handling.

Forza Motorsport will be released on October 10 for Xbox Series and PC. It will also be available via Xbox Game Pass from launch.
