From Twitter to ‘X’: Why Kingdom Hearts Fans are Comparing Organization XIII to the Platform’s Rebranding

Elon Musk’s renaming of Twitter to ‘X’ has the whole internet buzzing, and the Kingdom Hearts community cannot help but notice some parallels.

Elon Musk’s renaming of Twitter to ‘X’ has stirred up the Kingdom Hearts community unexpectedly due to parallels with the game’s lore. The significant numbers 7 and 13 in the Kingdom Hearts lore reflect in the timing of the rebranding, and the use of the color black in Twitter mirrors the aesthetics of Organization XIII. Similarities between Musk’s ‘X’ and Xehanort’s Organization XIII, including naming conventions, have led to humorous fan theories and memes.

Ever since the billionaire purchased the social media platform in late 2022, Elon Musk’s Twitter has been generating constant headlines. The latest news is the renaming of the iconic Twitter to the new, more ambiguous ‘X’, which drew attention for several reasons, but few could have expected that the move would particularly stir up the Kingdom Hearts community.

To understand exactly what it is about the shift from Twitter to ‘X’ that impacts Kingdom Hearts players so much, you will need a little understanding of the games’ story. The lore of the popular Disney and Final Fantasy crossover is notoriously convoluted, but in this context, it’s not too hard to understand where the memes are coming from.

The change to ‘X’ for Twitter, coupled with the platform’s new, powerful use of black color, shows many parallels with Xehanort’s Organization XIII in Kingdom Hearts. A post on the Kingdom Hearts subreddit collates some humorously startling similarities, such as Twitter trademarking their bird 13 years ago, or the change occurring in July, the 7th month of the year.

In Kingdom Hearts lore, the numbers 7 and 13 are essentially the cornerstones of the entire story and repeatedly appear throughout the series. The root of the KH story revolves around the original Keyblade, the X-Blade, which broke into 20 pieces, seven light and thirteen dark. There’s a prophecy that the seven guardians of light will unite to oppose the thirteen guardians of darkness and save Kingdom Hearts, thus the entire universe. The 13 warriors of darkness are Xehanort and the Organization members, while the seven warriors of light are currently Sora, Mickey, Riku, Lea, Aqua, Ventus, and Kairi. Granted, all of this isn’t set in stone, and which character fights on which side changes with every new title, such as Axel leaving Organization XIII and becoming his true self, Lea.

The ‘X’ name itself is the smoking gun that many point to when discussing the similarities between Musk’s social media platform and Xehanort’s shadowy collective. Every member of Organization XIII gets a new name, which is always an anagram of their old name with an ‘X’ added. Lea’s Organization XIII name is Axel, Sora’s nobody is Roxas, Ansem’s is Xemnas, and so forth. The catch here is that ‘X’ isn’t an anagram of Twitter with an ‘X’ added, but just an ‘X’ alone.

All these coincidental occurrences surrounding Twitter’s rebranding have prompted the Kingdom Hearts community to come up with some quite funny fan theories, such as Elon Musk being Master Xehanort, or that Twitter is being ‘Norted.’ Memes sprung up on the Kingdom Hearts subreddit and ‘X’ about users joining Organization XIII and donning the signature black cloaks seen in the series.

Details about what plans Elon Musk has for the future of the now-named ‘X’ are largely unknown for now. Chances are the reality won’t be as fantastical as a journey spanning Disney worlds where countless Heartless and Nobody are hunted down, but at least the Kingdom Hearts community gets a few memes out of it.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is now available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
