It Would Be Risky To Build Resident Evil 9 On A Character With Superpowers

While Rosemary Winters was an exceptional case (and it’s supposed to be a canon story, so officially part of the franchise), we’re not sure Capcom should continue along that line.

Rose is Ethan Winters’ daughter. Ethan saved her in the Resident Evil: Village storyline, sacrificing his life. In the DLC called Shadows of Rose, Rose was the protagonist. Still, as a teenager, and in the storyline, she was thus able to finally meet her father, perhaps a fitting way to end the Winters storyline that began in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. However, one question must be asked: wouldn’t it be too risky if the following main part of the franchise were to feature a character with such superpowers as the main protagonist? (Albert Wesker wasn’t a controllable character in the main story DLCs in the older episodes, either!)

Shadows of Rose balanced the protagonist’s power well with the management of resources, so the Japanese company didn’t sacrifice the survival horror direction. It’s still questionable how much of a role the Mold, RE7-8’s main bioweapon, will play in the next installment. If superpowers are retained as the new protagonist (if it’s a new character), Capcom would be pretty much alienating (again!) fans of the franchise, as Resident Evil would be taking an unprecedented, overly unusual turn.

If the Mold remains in the background in the new Resident Evil, it could be the source of the protagonist’s superpowers, but the franchise is back to its former glory thanks to the success of the Resident Evil 2/3/4 Remake. There, firearms are used instead of supernatural abilities. The Shadows of Rose DLC highlighted how they can be used to bring otherworldly enemies into the gameplay. The focus is on balancing preserving the direction of older games and innovating.

If they end up going with superpowers, then there is no clear, acceptable way to explain how the enemies got to be the way they are, and if there is a change, if it’s too excessive as it was in Resident Evil 5-6, going towards action-packed gameplay could occur again…
