IOI: Project 007 Tells The First Bond’s Story, Project Fantasy Is A Long Way Off

The Danish studio gave us some news about the two games in the pipeline.

Gamelab 2023 was held in Spain, and IO Interactive (IOI) was also present, as the company has a studio in Barcelona. GameReactor interviewed two developers from the studio. Senior technical executive producer Cris Vega said that Project 007 is in development, looks pretty cool, and tells the story of the first Bond (in an origin story, as we already knew). Still, he didn’t say much more about the game they announced in November 2020. The job listings clarified that it would be a third-person action game with robust AI and sandbox maps. That description also fits Hitman: World of Assassination.

Project Fantasy was announced a few months ago. Previously called Project Dragon, the game was rumored to be an Xbox exclusive before the official announcement. However, IOI lead core engine programmer Alvaro Fernandez didn’t talk much about it because he says it’s none of their business. He understands that nothing concrete has been made public about it. Vega added that it’s an online multiplayer RPG that will probably be available for console and PC like other IOI games, but nothing is confirmed, and it’s still years away from release.

We reported earlier that an internal Microsoft document had also named IOI as a possible acquisition target, but it has not (yet?) happened. The Danish firm now has James Bond first, as Agent 47 has been sent on a hiatus. Two studios have opened this year (in Brighton, UK, next to Istanbul, Turkey), bringing the total to over 300 people, with a target of around 400 developers, with no studio planned to have more than 100-150 (including the Copenhagen headquarters and another studio in Malmö, Sweden).

So IOI has taken the plunge into Project 007 in excellent shape. Perhaps Amazon, which has acquired MGM (the Bond rights owner), won’t be so crazy as to make it an Amazon Luna exclusive…
