A Story Twist In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?

The second chapter of Final Fantasy VII Remake could feature a twist similar to the one we saw in another AAA game (and exclusive) three years ago.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has already laid the groundwork: compared to Square’s original, Square Enix’s modern take on the game takes a different direction. While it’s a fact that the second chapter, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will certainly touch on the more important story points, there’s nothing stopping the Japanese developers from surprising the audience here and there. For this reason, it could follow the example of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II.

Judging by the trailers, it looks like Zack will have a much bigger role than in the original. Not only will he appear in flashbacks, but he’ll be working with the team as Square Enix deviates from the original timeline. As with Sony’s studio, there could be an unexpected twist: just like Joel over there, Cloud could die during the course of the story. In the original Final Fantasy VII, Zack is killed by Shinra soldiers before the events of the game (see Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII). Cloud witnessed this event. Suffering from the trauma, Zack’s memories and personality remain partially in him.

So Zack must have somehow survived the events, and it’s all a deception to end up with Zack as the main character. The twist could be that Cloud is executed by Sephiroth instead of Aerith. This twist would split the audience like Joel’s affair with Naughty Dog did, but if the ominous twist happens at the end of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players can have enough of an experience with Cloud to be a little more relaxed, and if it is the twist, the third chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake could turn the original on its head, as Zack could fight back against Sephiroth in the finale…

So it might be interesting to see how the story of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth changes. We’ll have to wait a little longer, though, as it’s coming to PlayStation 5 on February 29.
