Scary: What If Artificial Intelligence Takes Over The News Anchorial Role? [VIDEO]

TECH NEWS – You could say, somewhat sarcastically, that it’s a brave new future…

Ars Technica has discovered that a startup news channel, Channel 1, has posted a concept video on Twitter demonstrating how they are using artificial intelligence to host their newscasts. Based on the looks of real people, the anchors (the people in question were compensated!) were given elaborate behind-the-scenes systems to create their voices, behaviors, and facial expressions.

The lip sync is very good, and we can read the syllables from them with great accuracy. The body movements are not too rudimentary either, and the gestures are good, except for a few blurry moments when it seems obvious that we are watching the AI in action. Something doesn’t quite add up. It’s just hard to watch the video for any length of time (and it’s not short!) because there’s hardly any blinking, it speaks a bit slowly, expressions are rare, and the smile doesn’t seem genuine.

On the plus side, they interviewed a French citizen talking about storm damage, and the technology translates that into English, complete with lip sync. According to Deadline, Channel 1’s stories will be sourced from a yet-to-be-announced news agency, and independent journalists will contribute content. They will work from primary sources (such as government documents), and humans will be involved in every part of the editorial process. The channel plans to have a logo in one corner of the screen that indicates which headlines were created using AI.

Newsreaders have to work hard to be credible (especially if they’re not just delivering pro-government propaganda), and in the age of deep fake news, it’s no wonder that many are already fearful of this development, as the technology could just as easily be used for negative purposes. But regardless, technologically, the result is impressive until we get to the point in the video where a fully AI-created newsreader is talking about a car accident!

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
