Dwayne Johnson Wants to Work on Both “Meaningful” Movies and new Fast & Furious Movies in the Future

MOZI NEWS – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as Mark Kerr in the upcoming drama about the fast and furious life of a fighter.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is taking a dramatic turn in his next film, The Crusher, directed by Benny Safdie. In a new interview with Variety, Johnson said he feels he wants to make more dramatic films from now on (and also continue to make the films he’s best known for).

“I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in a way that I haven’t in the past. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore humanity and struggle [and] pain,” he said.

In The Smashing Machine, Johnson stars as Mark Kerr, a real-life extreme fighter known for his brutal mixed martial arts battles and private life of drug addiction.

Johnson said he was attracted to the film in part because Safdie wants to tell a story that is “raw and real” with “believable, sometimes uncomfortable and arresting characters”.

Don’t expect to see Johnson in any more of the types of films he is best known for – sprawling, big-budget, action and adventure films. But with The Crusher, Johnson is trying something new.

“I want to make it clear that I’m not saying that this means abandoning the big, four-quarter films. I love making them and there’s tremendous value and meaning [in them],” he said. “But they have their place and their time. I’m at the point in my career where I want more. And I don’t mean I want more blockbusters. I mean I want more humanity. And so Benny Safdie is the perfect, collaborative, hungry partner for me.”

In 2002, HBO released a documentary about Mark Kerr called The Smashing Machine, but the Safdie film is a dramatic film about the fighter’s life.

In addition to The Smashing Machine, Johnson’s other upcoming films include the holiday film Red One with Chris Evans, Jungle Cruise 2 and more Fast & Furious movies.
