Rumors point to an announcement from Microsoft as early as this month.
The Verge and XboxEra have both reported on what the Redmond-based company is allegedly up to. The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, claims that a multiplatform initiative is taking shape. Decisions are being made on what will remain Xbox-exclusive (or, more specifically, what will come out for the Xbox line and PC) and what may come to other non-Xbox platforms (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5). Citing sources who requested anonymity (because they can’t talk about Microsoft’s plans), XboxEra claims that a public announcement will be made during February.
According to The Verge, the recently titled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (which MachineGames is working on) is coming to Xbox Series and PC in December, and could come to PlayStation 5 “a few months later” after consideration. The timing is subject to change as the multiplatform approach is still being finalized. Multiplatform announcements may also be coming for Hi-Fi Rush (we’ve heard rumors of this), and data mining suggests there are PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch assets. Launch window? First quarter, end of March at the latest. Starfield is expected to have its first DLC, Shattered Space, sometime this year, after which there could be talk of a PlayStation 5 port, and Microsoft has reportedly made additional investments to acquire PlayStation 5 devkits to support development efforts.
Microsoft executives debated whether to release previously exclusive games on other platforms, but the money that multiplatform releases could bring to the company was ultimately the deciding factor in the discussion. Additionally, earlier in January, Game File reported that Sea of Thieves could be coming to PlayStation 5, and Stephen Totilo, writing for Axios, added that he suspected a release date for it or he wouldn’t have written about it.
So Microsoft seems willing to open up to other platforms, which could be interpreted as an indication that Xbox Series/PC-only sales and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions haven’t jumped significantly even with Starfield…
