Disney Makes A Big Move Into The Gaming Industry: Investment In Epic Games! [VIDEO]

In addition, a new world with a Disney gaming and entertainment presence is in the works, which will also be connected to Fortnite. So Disney X Fortnite…

The Walt Disney Company has purchased a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games, and the two companies will collaborate on a universe of Disney games and entertainment that will be tied to Fortnite. Consumers will have more ways to play, watch and buy content, characters and stories from the Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar worlds. They can also create their own stories, share content and “share their fandom in a distinctly Disney way.”

Robert A. Iger, chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company, said in a press release, “Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the wildly popular Fortnite in a transformative new gaming and entertainment universe. This marks Disney’s largest entry into the world of gaming to date, and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways. Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, added: “Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio. Now we’re collaborating on something entirely new to build a durable, open and interoperable ecosystem that brings the Disney and Fortnite communities together.” Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, said, “This will allow us to bring together our incredible collection of stories and experiences from across the company for a broad audience in ways we could only have dreamed of before. Epic Games’ industry-leading technology and Fortnite’s open ecosystem will help us reach consumers where they are, so they can engage with Disney in the way that’s most relevant to them.”

It will be interesting to see how the two companies come together, and we can be sure that Disney will have easy access to the Unreal Engine, as they threw no small amount of money at the mouse empire’s Tim Sweeney. Just don’t let anything go the other way, like a Fortnite animated series on Disney+…
