MOVIE NEWS – Venom 3 is getting an exciting filming update from new star Juno Temple after various delays pushed Sony’s third Spider-Man universe sequel.
After encountering various delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Juno Temple has an exciting Venom 3 filming update. Plot details for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe movie are still unknown. Franchise star Tom Hardy co-wrote the story with fellow franchise veteran Kelly Marcel. The latter wrote the script and also made her directorial debut in the project.
Filming on the film, which also stars Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Clark Backo, was initially scheduled to begin in June 2023, but was postponed that year due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and the cameras started rolling again in November of that year.
Variety spoke with Temple about her upcoming role in Venom 3 during her appearance at the 2024 SAG Awards. While she didn’t reveal details about the undisclosed lead, she did confirm that filming is “nearing completion.” However, she described her time with the SSU trilogy as “a wild, wonderful ride.” She expressed that she felt the film was “going to be a good one”. Here’s what Temple had to say:
“We’re coming close to an end at the moment. It’s been a wild, wonderful ride. It’s so new to me. It’s a big set! This is crazy. It’s been so much fun and I got to work with such cool people. I’ve been so lucky in my career to just have the most incredible casts. I can’t wait for it to get out into the world. I think it’s going to be a good one.”
Venom 3 will be decisive for the future of SSU
Amid the franchise’s critical pandering, the first two Venom films continue to stand out in SSU. In particular, they were primarily received favourably by the public. Hardy’s portrayal of both journalist Eddie Brock and the titular symbiote drew specific acclaim. In both parts, he committed to playing the unpredictable nature of a man who has to share his body with a juvenile alien and his general tongue-in-cheek tone.
Although Morbius’ 71% audience rating indicates overall viewer approval of the Jared Leto-led film, the movie is famous for finding success as a “so bad it’s almost good” film.
With both the 2022 instalment and the just-released Madame Web proving to be a financial disappointment for the franchise, it’s clear that SSU is approaching the “make or break” point. Despite the issues, however, Venom 3 might just be the security Sony needs to continue the franchise.
One of the main problems with SSU as a whole was how Sony built up the entire universe of characters associated with Spider-Man. They were without any major Marvel connections, as they only owned the rights to Spider-Man. However, as the first two films show, the fan base surrounding the anti-hero was enough to make him a bigger box-office success outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This seemingly guarantees that Venom 3 will continue this streak. If it is indeed a success, it could also give Sony a better model for how to move forward with SSU.
