Huawei signs patent agreement with two of the world’s leading technology companies

TECH NEWS – Huawei Technologies has signed a global patent cross-licensing agreement with Amazon and Chinese smartphone maker Vivo. The new partnerships represent a mutual recognition of the value of intellectual property between the companies and reflect industry collaboration in investing in research, product and service development. Huawei continues to invest in research and development and tops the rankings for the number of patent applications filed. The company’s innovation has also been recognised by the industry: at this year’s GLOMO Awards, Huawei won in several categories for its leading mobile technology solutions.

Amazon and Huawei Technologies have signed a long-term patent cross-licensing agreement that resolves legal differences between the two companies. Under the agreement, both companies will be able to use each other’s proprietary technologies, promoting innovation and consumer benefits.

“Huawei is pleased to share its intellectual property rights with Amazon. The patent licensing will expand the number of companies that can use the proprietary technologies, and this will provide consumers with more innovative products and services,” said Alan Fan, head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department.

“Amazon recognizes Huawei’s global patent portfolio, innovation and contributions to the standardization process. It also respects Huawei’s efforts to license its patents to companies like Amazon,” said Scott Hayden, Amazon’s vice president of intellectual property rights.

Huawei has also reached an agreement with smartphone maker Vivo, as part of the deal the two companies will share essential communications technologies, including 5G patents. The agreement will allow the companies to access key technologies to further their business development and help them work together to advance digitalisation and ICT standards globally, while respecting the value of each other’s intellectual property.

Huawei again filed the most patent applications in 2023

Huawei places a strong emphasis on R&D, with investments exceeding 110.5 billion RMB in 2022 and a total of 845 billion RMB over the past ten years. According to the latest report from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the company will once again lead the world in the number of patent applications filed in 2023 with 6494 applications. Huawei became the world leader for the first time in 2020, and was also the most prolific company in 2022 with more than 7,600 patent applications filed.

Huawei also tops the rankings at European level, with the latest European Patent Office (EPO) Patent Index 2022 showing the company at the top of the European patent rankings for the third consecutive year. Huawei filed 4505 international invention registrations last year, accounting for almost a quarter of all applications.

The company’s innovation efforts have been recognised by industry experts. At this year’s Mobile World Congress, several of Huawei’s products and solutions won one of the most prestigious awards, the GLOMO Awards. Among others, the company’s developments were recognised in the sub-categories “Best Mobile Network Infrastructure”, “Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough”, “Best Network Software Breakthrough”, “Best Private Network Solution” and “Best Mobile Innovation in Emerging Markets”.
