PlayStation Portal Has “Obtained” A Really Useful New Feature But Not For Long…

TECH NEWS – Google engineers managed to run PSP games natively on the PlayStation Portal, using the device offline.

Several months ago, PlayStation Portal, a portable device for playing PS5 games remotely, was released. While many players may have been unhappy with some of its restrictions, Sony says demand has “continued to exceed our expectations”. However, recently, a group of hackers managed to do something surprising…

As reported by VGC, a group of Google engineers managed to run PSP games on the PS5 handheld, PlayStation Portal.

The developers of the exploit are members of the Google Cloud vulnerability research team. They managed to play PSP games on PS Portal through an emulator. Even without an internet connection, natively. However, Andy Nguyen, a researcher at Google, said on X/Twitter that they had informed Sony about the problem.

“We responsibly reported the issues to PlayStation,” Nguyen wrote. “Bugs are fixed on 2.06,” noted on his official account. Among the responses to the post, many users wanted to know how he managed to achieve this. However, the Google engineer refused to reveal the details publicly. He also explained that if the method were made public, Sony would have already patched the exploit. “If we just released it to the public, do you think Sony would just leave it unpatched?” he asked the question.

PlayStation Portal is not built on profitability

In mid-November, Sony itself admitted that PS Portal was not made for profit. However, the Japanese team intended to “increase the PS5’s gaming hours”. On the other hand, it seems that the device may also be open to cloud gaming. Indeed, Sony stated that “there are no technical limitations that prevent PS Portal from enjoying cloud gaming”. Although the product may have some limitations, the addition of new features would make buying the device more attractive. This could be the case, for example, if we could play PSP titles on it, now without any kind of exploit…
