TECH NEWS – The head of Meta says the other companies working on artificial intelligence may have gone too far.
When artificial general intelligence (AGI) arrives, it’s fair to ask: can we control it, or will it take over? Mark Zuckerberg believes that other AI companies are suffering from some kind of God complex, and he talked about this in more detail in an interview with the YouTube channel Kallaway. Zuck sees others as taking a somewhat messianic approach to AI development.
“I find it a pretty big turnoff when people in the tech industry talk about building this ‘one true AI.’ It’s almost like they think they’re creating God or something. That’s not what we’re doing, I don’t think that’s how it works. Some people say there’s going to be the one true big AI that can do everything, and I just don’t think that’s the way things are going.
I understand why, if you’re in an AI lab, you want to feel like what you’re doing is super important, like “we’re building the one true thing for the future. But I just think realistically, that’s not how things work. It’s not like there’s one app on people’s phones that people use. There’s not one creator that people want to get all their content from, there’s not one app that people want to get all their content from, there’s not one company that people want to buy everything from,” Zuckerberg said.
Facebook is not what it was when it started. Originally a place for college students to check up on their classmates, it’s now sucking in millions of dollars a week from political ads and wants to be in all of our social activities. Sales, news, jobs, dating… Zuckerberg’s Metaverse sounds like the “one” app that wants to be everything. That’s what Elon Musk’s Twitter wants to be…
Zuck says smartphones will eventually be replaced by smartglasses, and he thinks that will happen in a decade. He thinks there will be HUDs (displays) or wristbands that pick up signals from the brain, allowing users to type with almost no hand gestures. That sounds a little perverse.
