Halle Berry Has One Surprising Condition to Return as Catwoman—And It’s Not What You’d Expect!

MOVIE NEWS – Halle Berry might be open to revisiting one of her most notorious roles, but there’s a catch. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Berry reflected on her recent birthday, her role in carrying the torch at the Paris Olympics, and the 20th anniversary of her DC Comics film Catwoman. While many DC fans may prefer to forget that film, Berry certainly hasn’t. In fact, she revealed she’d consider reprising the role—under one specific condition.

Catwoman tells the tale of Patience Philips, a timid and sensitive artist played by Berry, who seems to apologize for just existing. She works as a graphic designer at Hedare Beauty, a massive cosmetics corporation about to launch a groundbreaking anti-aging product. But when Patience stumbles upon a dark secret her employer is hiding, she gets caught up in a dangerous corporate conspiracy that changes her life forever.

While Berry is perhaps better known for her role as Storm in the X-Men films, her portrayal of Patience Philips in the 2004 Catwoman movie has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. The film was heavily criticized and largely ignored by audiences when it debuted in July 2004. However, Berry told Fallon that the movie is finally finding a new audience, thanks to streaming services. When Fallon asked if she’d ever consider playing Catwoman again, Berry responded with a surprising condition:

“Maybe, if I could direct it.”

It’s unclear whether Berry is genuinely interested in returning to the role if she could direct, but she has some experience behind the camera, having directed the 2020 drama Bruised. Regardless, Berry shared her excitement that the film is gaining a cult following among younger viewers discovering it for the first time.

“What I’m happy about is the children have found it now on the internet. The kids love it. It’s so vindicating because now they’re saying it’s cool, and what the heck was everybody’s problem with it?” she said.

How Halle Berry Made History at The Razzies Thanks to Catwoman

It’s no secret that Catwoman is often labeled one of the worst comic book movies ever. With an 8% Tomatometer score and an 18% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film flopped hard at the box office, making only $40 million domestically on a $100 million budget. Yet, Berry has stood by the film over the years. When it was nominated for seven Razzie Awards, winning four, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress, Berry made history by becoming the first Razzie winner to accept her award in person, humorously carrying her Best Actress Oscar for Monster’s Ball along with her.

While Berry has been revisiting Catwoman in recent conversations, Marvel fans are left wondering why she didn’t reprise her role as Storm in this summer’s blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Berry had previously expressed her willingness to return as Storm, especially as the film’s multiverse theme brought back many characters from non-MCU Marvel films. Despite what seemed like a perfect opportunity to reunite with Hugh Jackman, Berry didn’t make an appearance. She recently shared that Ryan Reynolds’s wife, Blake Lively, once approached her about it at a Marc Jacobs fashion show, asking if she’d ever consider appearing in her husband’s movie as Storm. Berry’s response?

“I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me.”
