For the first time ever, we have official data on how much Ubisoft’s biggest game has sold.
Massive Entertainment has invested a lot of time and money into the Yves Guillemot-led publisher’s game, but so far Star Wars Outlaws has only sold 1 million copies. Ubisoft wants to learn a lesson so that it doesn’t happen again with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which has been delayed until February. But to do that, they would have to do something like not reveal the content of the Season Pass BEFORE the game is released! This could be seen as a somewhat exploitative move, and so the publisher let it be known that only Season Pass holders will have access to the new missions and story.
The director of Star Wars Outlaws was a bit surprised that his game only received a score of 76/100 on Metacritic. According to Ubisoft, the game’s performance was “softer” than expected, which may have led to the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. But that game also received its fair share of criticism (historical inaccuracies; in Japan, there were calls to stop development; the one-legged Torii gate reminds the audience of the Nagasaki bombing, because although there are some in the country, there is only one such gate…). In the case of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft also canceled the announcement at the Tokyo Game Show and the preview for the press.
Insider Gaming reports that Ubisoft is trying to learn from the criticism and is working to address historical and cultural concerns and respond to feedback. The story of Yasuke, one of the main characters, is being reworked, but the portrayal of the character is also being addressed, as is the architecture. Sources say that the historians joined the team too late in the game’s development, and that there were a lot of misunderstandings as a result…
So, Star Wars Outlaws hasn’t made the sales so far (and so it will be hard to make up for what Ubisoft expects), and Assassin’s Creed Shadows is in a messy situation…
