Sony’s console is still remembered today, and there was a lot of interest in it two decades ago, and even a decade ago.
The PS2 was released in 2000 and became the world’s best-selling platform. A big factor in the console’s success was that it was a much cheaper DVD player at launch compared to desktop models, so Sony bet big on a good format. Meanwhile, the console was also capable of running PS1 games, so the platform was not only able to keep audiences interested in the new generation of titles, but also in the older ones.
On Reddit, a user named KarqUwU shared a video of an Iraqi DVD store. This would be this particular “PlayStation 2 graveyard”. On the second floor of the store, there are a lot of PS2 disks without cases. Not surprisingly, these are copied discs (not everyone there could afford the originals). Another commenter from Iraq added that modded PS2s and pirated discs were a best practice in the country, as the public could buy games for a fraction of the original price.
Lack of originality aside, many great PS2 titles appeared in the video, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Willing Eleven, and the first LEGO Batman installment. The disks look abandoned, but it turns out they’re for sale. Each pack contains around 100 games and can be purchased for between $3 and $10. Since it’s a relatively old platform, the prices are understandable, although who knows how much of the rotten discs are still usable today and what is no longer applicable to a PS2.
The PlayStation 2 was a great console and it just goes to show that Jim Ryan, the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was wrong. He said in vain that people in the Middle East didn’t play games before the PlayStation.
