PC Gaming’s Triumph: Why It Outshines Consoles Amid Industry Crisis

They are “the light at the end of the tunnel.” Amid the gaming industry’s struggles, PC game sales rise above console sales. According to a new study, while console gaming has lost momentum in recent years, PC gaming is heading in the opposite direction.

The video game industry as a whole is facing tough times. Sales are inconsistent, developments are slow to revive old trends, and studio closures along with widespread layoffs are frequent. However, a recent report by Matthew Ball, CEO of the investment strategy firm Epyllion, reveals that PC games are generating more revenue than console games, cementing the so-called “master race” as the “light at the end of the tunnel.”

The report, The State of Gaming in 2025, which compiles data from Newzoo, IDG, and Circana, shows that the industry experienced a decade of steady revenue growth between 2011 and 2021, but overall growth has since slowed. While console sales have seen a decline, PC game revenue has grown by 20% since 2021. “This increase is largely due to the inherent advantages of the PC ecosystem, such as a broader title library, backward compatibility, and access to live streaming tools and social platforms,” the report explains.

The report notes a significant decline in console sales. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have sold nearly seven million fewer units compared to their predecessors during the same timeframe. In contrast, PC gaming is gaining momentum, thanks in part to portable devices like the Steam Deck and the growing popularity of platforms like Roblox, which attract younger generations of players.

China’s Role in PC Gaming’s Success

The study emphasizes that China’s role in PC gaming success cannot be underestimated. Although there is no consensus on the market share of each platform, Newzoo reports that in 2023, console games generated $56.1 billion, while PC games brought in $40 billion. On the other hand, Epyllion cites sources suggesting that PC games generated 50% more revenue than console games. Matthew Ball attributes this disparity to differences in tracking specific markets, such as China, where PC gaming thrives, as evidenced by the success of Black Myth: Wukong.

Despite differing figures, Ball remains optimistic about the industry’s future. He predicts that competitive advantages will continue to grow, especially if platforms like Steam further expand into portable devices. This trend could position PC gaming as the leading force in the gaming industry for years to come.
