Nintendo Switch 2: The Importance of Exclusive Games and Pricing Considerations

NINTENDO NEWS – For the Japanese company’s next-generation console, the Big N will try to use pricing that works for us.

Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo’s CEO, spoke during the company’s quarterly earnings call that more Switch games will be made, but in the meantime, they are prioritizing the development of Switch 2-exclusive games. We’ve already heard that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends Z-A will (also?) be coming to the Switch later this year, and while Switch development will continue, Switch 2 exclusives will be key to the platform’s success. Nintendo is trying to create a subtle generational shift between the two platforms.

So it probably won’t be long before the Japanese company starts releasing Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games. (We suspect that Mario Kart 9 – or whatever it will be called – will be one of them). It should be noted, however, that “only” 4.82 million Switch units were sold in the last three months of 2024, but that still put Nintendo’s hybrid console over the 150 million sales mark. Outside of Nintendo, third-party developers will likely jump to the Switch’s successor much faster than they jumped from the PlayStation 4/Xbox One duo to the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series pair.

As for pricing, Furukawa said that Nintendo will have to take into account rising inflation in Japan and that currency exchange rates have also changed significantly since the Switch’s launch in 2017. However, he added that the company also has to consider the favorable pricing that consumers have come to expect from the company’s products, so these factors will all play a role in how much the Switch 2 will cost. The Switch is currently available in three models (base model, Lite, OLED), but Nintendo has no plans to change the price of these.

We’ll hear more about the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2, when the Big N will hold its Nintendo Direct focused on the new platform…
