Stranger Things Season 5: A Much More Positive Update on the Release Date

MOVIE NEWSStranger Things fans, we finally have some good news. According to the Duffer Brothers, they are “ahead of schedule” in post-production for Season 5 and have confirmed that the final season will arrive in 2025. The exact premiere date is still unknown, but this update clears up fan concerns after the show was oddly missing from Netflix’s 2025 content slate.

Just a few days ago, the minds behind Netflix’s hit fantasy-horror series were unsure whether they could complete the season in time for a 2025 release: “A lot of it hasn’t been decided, in terms of exactly the release dates and cadence… I just know it was very important for us and Netflix that we get it out this year. But even that is quite the push.”

However, Collider now reports that Matt and Ross Duffer have officially confirmed the show will return this year. The Stranger Things creators attended SCAD TVfest, where they were honored for their television work, and while there, they answered some burning questions about the upcoming season. They made it clear that “Stranger Things Season 5 is coming this year,” though they tempered expectations by adding, “it’s still a long way away.” Netflix’s silence on the matter remains a mystery, but it’s likely because the Duffers are deep in post-production:

“Right now, we’re focused on visual effects sequences. We started in January, and it’s going well. We’re actually ahead of schedule, which is rare for us, so that’s great.”

Stranger Things Returns in 2025 – What We Know So Far

As Netflix executives prepare to make the inevitable official announcement, let’s take a closer look at what we already know about the final season of one of the streamer’s biggest hits. Season 5 will mark the end of the series and will consist of eight episodes. It’s unclear whether the season will be split into two parts, but given how massive Stranger Things is, fans likely wouldn’t mind. A three-part release, like Cobra Kai? Now that would be frustrating.

The runtime of each episode remains a mystery. Season 4’s episodes were nearly feature-length, and the Duffer Brothers have previously hinted that Season 5’s episodes will be “as epic as a blockbuster movie.” Netflix has also yet to confirm whether all episodes will drop at once or if they’ll follow a weekly schedule.

The biggest question on everyone’s mind: who is returning for Season 5? Matthew Modine, aka Papa, was seemingly killed in Season 4, but he has posted photos online wearing extensive makeup, teasing a possible return. The Season 4 finale left Sadie Sink’s Max in a coma, but based on her latest statements, she will be back. Could this mean we’ll see other characters return from the Upside Down? Fans are keeping their fingers crossed for Eddie Munson, Barbara, and Bob Newby.
