Robert Downey Jr. Embraces Villainous Turn as Doctor Doom in Upcoming Marvel Films

MOVIE NEWS – Robert Downey Jr. is diving deep into his new role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking on the infamous character of Doctor Doom.

Several months ago, the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this time portraying the primary antagonist in the forthcoming Avengers films, sent the internet into a frenzy. Fans’ faith in Kevin Feige was reignited! Downey’s return not only brings back one of the franchise’s most recognizable figures but also an actor deeply committed to his roles.

Doctor Doom is no exception. Joe Russo, director of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, highlighted in a recent interview the actor’s dedication to the Fantastic Four’s arch-nemesis: “He’s crafting his backstory, contributing ideas for the costumes… He loves these three-dimensional, narratively rich characters, and I think he sees a real opportunity with this one.” The filmmaker added, “We were on the phone with him this morning before we got here. He’s very focused and deeply involved in this project.”

There’s no reason to doubt this commitment. Christopher Nolan once remarked that casting Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man was one of the best decisions in cinematic history, despite initial skepticism about Marvel’s risk at the time. Now, we’ll see if they’ve struck gold again with him as the ruler of Latveria.

Avengers: Doomsday Release Date

We’ll find out starting May 1, 2026, when Disney has scheduled Avengers: Doomsday to hit theaters. The project is expected to begin filming in the coming weeks, so soon we might see images of Downey Jr. and his co-stars in character.

By the way, Joe Russo’s interview was conducted by Entertainment Tonight on the occasion of the premiere of Estado eléctrico, which is set to debut on Netflix on March 14. This science fiction film boasts a record budget for the platform and follows Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt on a journey through a retro-futuristic, partially apocalyptic America of the 1990s, filled with robots.
