Marathon: Not A Full-Price Game According to Bungie!

Bungie finally gave us a more detailed look at the Marathon reboot over the weekend, which a developer from Concord says shouldn’t be written off just yet.

Marathon will not be a free-to-play game. Rumors are that it will be in Concord’s price range, meaning you might have to pay $40 for it. Bungie told GameSpot that it will be a premium title, which means it will be a pay-to-play game. The studio did not give a specific price, only saying that it will not be full price. However, it could be cheaper than $40 because Sony might be worried that Marathon could go the way of Concord.

Granted, Concord was created by a completely different (and not veteran) team compared to Bungie, and it was a new IP, while Marathon is an existing IP with a fan base. It should be added that the game’s success will not only depend on pricing, but also on how the market for live service games evolves, which has since been invaded by NetEase’s Marvel Rivals, putting pressure on Overwatch 2, whose user base has surprisingly declined (we wrote about this before).

Meanwhile, on Reddit, Stephan Williams, lead visual effects artist at Firewalk Studios, which is developing Concord, has asked the public to at least give Marathon a chance: “After reading the comments about Marathon being Concord 2.0 on Reddit, YouTube and Twitch, I just wanted to give a little insight into what a forty year old man feels after dedicating a large part of his life to making video games. Concord failed to inspire players, and the message was heard loud and clear. It was heartbreaking to see our project fail and become the laughing stock of many online.

I have learned that failure is what drives me to succeed. No one feels as bad as the people who put their time into this in the hopes that it will entertain the masses of gamers around the world. But to call this game a failure before it’s even out is insane to me. Seeing the faces of the developers on the Bungie stream gave me hope and excitement for what is to come for Marathon. I commend them for taking a risk, trying something unfamiliar, unproven, and with no guarantee of success. It takes a lot of courage. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Bungie will cook. They always do,” Williams wrote.

It’s worth considering what Williams said…
