Spine: What on Earth Is Freeflow Gun Fu? [VIDEO]

Nekki’s game may have been announced for a new platform, but Spine has a backbone… and it hasn’t lost any of its speed.

The new trailer showcases Spine’s free-flowing Gun Fu combat, in which the protagonist, Redline, moves from enemy to enemy, parrying and disarming them, and turning their own weapons against them in seamless combos. Players can creatively use the physical environment against Redline’s opponents – smashing enemies against surfaces, throwing them off ledges, and fighting back with makeshift melee weapons for truly cinematic combat sequences that are different every time. The trailer also includes the first look at Spine’s Hardcore mode. In Spine’s cinematic take on “no-hit” gameplay, Redline wears sunglasses that only remain intact if the player makes it through the game unscathed by enemy attacks.

“Freeflow Gun Fu combat means constant tactical awareness – both of your enemies and of the environment in which you fight. For us, it all comes back to that cinematic experience, while always giving the player complete control. We want players to feel like the star and director of their own action movie, rewarding them with opportunities for creative takedowns by mastering the combo system and the environment, and showcasing their combos with dynamic camera angles to immerse them in the action,” said Dmitry Pimenov, director of Spine.

Spine is a single-player, story-driven action game announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. Only Nekki has added the Nintendo Switch 2 to the mix, so the big N’s new platform will be joined by another third-party title. At the very least, it’s a gamble that it won’t be released until June, when the Nintendo Switch 2 hits stores. We also say this because Spine doesn’t have a release date yet.

If we had to guess, Nekki is also waiting for Take-Two to announce when Grand Theft Auto V will arrive, because without it, it would probably arrive in the fall…
