Star Wars Outlaws Failed to Deliver – Now Ubisoft Bets on Switch 2 to Save It

Ubisoft is targeting Nintendo Switch 2 after disappointing results for Star Wars Outlaws. The publisher is hoping that a September 4 release on the hybrid console can help the game recover and reach a wider audience.

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows has dominated recent headlines, Ubisoft has quietly continued work on other titles like Star Wars Outlaws. Initially released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, the sci-fi adventure starring Kay Vess is now officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Launching on September 4, the game’s release on the new hybrid console could breathe new life into a title that’s struggled commercially.

The current Nintendo Switch lacks the power to run modern titles natively, which is why many studios—including Ubisoft—have waited for the Switch 2. Nintendo has confirmed that its upcoming hardware can support games like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Split Fiction. Adding Star Wars Outlaws to this lineup is part of Ubisoft’s strategy to revitalize interest in the underperforming sci-fi title.

Star Wars Outlaws’ new story expansion launches in May

Alongside the Switch 2 news, Ubisoft also made a content-related announcement during Star Wars Celebration: a new story expansion titled A Pirate’s Fortune will be available starting May 15. It offers fans a chance to return to—or enter for the first time—George Lucas’s iconic universe.

“Embark on a mysterious adventure with Kay and Nix to explore the Khepi system and discover what it takes to be a true leader,” reads the official description on Ubisoft’s website. “Team up with legendary pirate Hondo Ohnaka and take on Stinger Tash and his Rokan Corsairs as you infiltrate the Khepi Tomb to uncover its secrets and hidden treasures. Along the way, you’ll discover the Miyuki Trade League, offering new bounties for the Starhunter to transport illegal goods across the galaxy.”

Star Wars Outlaws hasn’t achieved the commercial success Ubisoft hoped for. In fact, poor sales were one of the factors that reportedly delayed the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Despite this, Ubisoft remains confident in the title’s long-term potential, and expanding to new platforms—like the Nintendo Switch 2—is a key part of that plan. Until then, players can try the free demo on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
