Rumors suggest that the new version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) could significantly improve the 4K resolution of the half-generation console refresh.
In a new video, Moore’s Law is Dead discussed the upcoming version of PSSR. Previously, he had shared accurate leaks about the PlayStation 5 Pro and its upscaling technology before the official announcements. Now he reveals that Sony is training a new lightweight neural network that requires fewer frames and delivers better image quality, no matter the base resolution. The current PSSR needs 864p as a base, which is relatively high compared to Nvidia DLSS‘ Ultra Performance mode. But the new version promises better image quality from even lower resolutions.
Pushing for 4K/120 FPS and 8K/60 FPS
According to the leaker, Sony’s goal is to make true 4K at 120 FPS and 8K at 60 FPS possible. While some games already achieve 4K/120 FPS with the current PSSR, this new upscaler will help those that currently top out at 70–80 FPS deliver higher quality and better performance. This improvement mirrors the leap from AMD FSR 2.0 to FSR 3.1.
The new PSSR version will also support 1440p and 1080p resolutions at 120 FPS—something the current version doesn’t offer, as it only outputs 4K. Even games using MFSR (an internal label for the upscaler) instead of PSSR are expected to see visual improvements. MFSR will act as an alternative to TAA, promising superior image quality.
The Future: PS6 and Beyond
Since the current PS5 Pro upscaling implementation has seen mixed results, it’s only logical that Sony is working on an enhanced version that could lay the foundation for its next-generation console. According to some, the PlayStation 6 is expected to support PSSR as well—though that’s still just a rumor.
