Many details have emerged from the canceled sequel, which had little to do with Insomniac Games (they only acquired the rights from Disney after the fact).
Spider-Man has been spun off into several versions in the gaming industry. The version from Insomniac Games, one of Sony’s studios, is understandably the most famous at the moment, but fans may remember the 2005 version, which was essentially a playable comic book. The Ultimate Spider-Man remains one of the best adaptations of the wall-crawling hero and has gained a cult following over the years. A sequel to the game was once in development, and thanks to the artist of the concept art, details about the title have now emerged.
The title would have featured the return of Wolverine, with Dr. Doom playing a minor role in the story. In addition, Daredevil and The Hand would have been featured in the story. According to the details, Shadowcast from the X-Men would have had a supporting role and players would have been able to control the Green Goblin as a second playable protagonist. The expanded gameplay would also include mini gunships and winter weather effects. The open world of New York City would have been expanded to include the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Coney Island. The story for the sequel was loosely based on the comic book Ultimate Spider-Man: Death of a Goblin. The comic book storyline was about Spider-Man and the Green Goblin’s battle after the supposed death of the main villain. Peter Parker’s identity would be revealed to his enemies, who would join forces to defeat our hero.
Unfortunately, the sequel was never released because Activision felt that the sales of the first game were insufficient. At the time, Treyarch was also working on Call of Duty 3 and Spider-Man 3, which put the final nail in the sequel’s coffin. The game was released on multiple platforms, with Treyarch bringing together the PS2, Xbox, GameCube and PC ports, Vicarious Visions working on the GBA and Nintendo DS versions, and Mforma producing the mobile edition.
